Over one year in Indonesia...

This month was yet again full of new experiences and unexpected twists and turns. On February 9th we celebrated living one full year in Indonesia, and as we reflected back on our first year we saw that this has been a common theme since we arrived.

Here are a few highlights of how our Father worked:

  • Jake's Master's program in Soil and Water Management at UB is continuing to progress well. This semester is significantly lighter than last semester, which we are both thankful for!

  • Two of Jake's closest friends on campus have started to spend more time in our home as well, which has deepened their relationship even more.

  • A banana expert from America came briefly to visit our team, and Jake was able to glean as much wisdom from his as possible over the course of a few days.

  • At the weekly "Gathering" (as coined by the Amber's Yemeni friends) the girls are slowly working their way through the "I Am" statements in John.

  • Amber has begun to teach English to a group of women in the Arab community, and is currently getting ready to teach another J2E course starting in March.

  • A new friendship has opened doors for us to begin investing in the Libyan refugee community

New Opportunities

Amber has started to teach a group of eight Arab women 1-2 times per week, all of them refugees from either Saudi or Yemen. They are all at very different levels in their language acquisition, but she is gradually learning how to meet all of their needs. A secondary purpose of this class is to provide hope to these women who feel trapped in a new country with no opportunities to work or study. Studying English together gives them something to look forward to each week, and reminds them that they do have "a hope and a future!"

Another unexpected friendship that has gradually developed over time is within the Libyan community. Turns out there are dozens of Libyan refugees living just one neighborhood over from us! Amber has begun to spend time with a woman in this community who has welcomed her into her home to try Libyan coffee and pastries. They hope to begin spending more time together baking and studying.
