Our First Month
It is hard to believe we have already been living in Malang for over one month now. Since our last update we have had many more “small victories” in learning how to navigate this new, beautiful culture, but also some BIG things are happening too!

Sulawesi
A couple weeks ago two of our teammates visited Sulawesi (an island north of us known to be very difficult to reach.) While there, they met with village leaders and committed to work with local farmers by attempting to dry and market a threatened variety of banana found only in that region in order to promote its propagation and increase the welfare of the community. In another region, a similar relationship was formed with village leaders in hopes of drying a rare variety of pineapple
(the skin turns purple when ripe!)--again, with the purpose of increasing propagation and giving people an opportunity to use their own resources in order to develop the community in a sustainable way. Progress may take some time, and it will be a few more months before Jake has enough language to help with the project, but we are excited to see what will come out of this partnership as we bring "professional help and personal hope"!
