J2E! (Jump Into English)

Amber just wrapped up her first English class here in Malang. The course ran for 8 weeks and has been focused not only on language development, but on spiritual growth as well. Many fruitful discussions came up during each lesson!

While Amber taught the adult class (along with help from the team to get more native English speakers involved), she also prepped lessons for the J2E Kids Class that Jake stepped in to teach. Though he wasn't expecting to be involved in teaching, a lot of fruit came out of his willingness to help (such as relational connections, spiritual discussions, and, of course, language development!)

We ended our 8 weeks with an outing to Kebun Raya, a beautiful nature preserve with lots of space for games and activities. The day was a success: the kids and adults all had fun while learning English through games and discussion. We did, however, run into +20 monkeys while out exploring... but they didn't bother us so it all turned out fine in the end!

The next J2E is starting at the end of May. Teams recently arrived from the States for a 2-month internship with Resource Exchange International, so Amber has the opportunity to assist in training engineers how to teach a discussion-based English course for young working adults. After the teams return to America, Amber is hoping to continue to teach these adults twice a week in order to improve their English skills as well as build deeper, ongoing relationships.

Kidiri - seeing the plant firsthand

We made our first trip out to Kidiri and got to see where the fruit processing and production takes place. It was a joy to finally meet the men and women who work there. After seeing the process firsthand, we are now even more excited for what is next!

Language Study

Over the last 3 months we have grown rapidly in our language acquisition. Though we are now living in our own home, opportunities to practice speaking with locals are still endless. We officially passed Level 1 and have moved on to Level 2. After Level 3 we should be fluent in the language! Though there are still discouraging moments and it feels like there is always more to learn, we have been developing relationships that are 100% in Bahasa with our neighbors and other people in our community.
